Quick answer: how to download an RSS feed

Paste a public RSS or Atom feed URL, select Extract feed, then use Download JSON. Tools Lab PRO fetches and parses the feed on the server, lists every published item with its title, link, date and a 280-character excerpt, and shows a live progress indicator with how many items are downloaded and how many are left.

  1. 1Copy the public RSS or Atom feed URL (often /feed, /rss, /feed.xml or /atom.xml).
  2. 2Paste the URL into the field above and select Extract feed.
  3. 3Watch the progress indicator as items are read and prepared for download.
  4. 4Review the feed title, item count, links, dates and excerpts in the results list.
  5. 5Use Copy JSON or Download JSON to save the structured items file.

What is an RSS feed downloader?

An RSS feed downloader is an online tool that reads a public feed file and converts its entries into a readable list plus a structured file you can keep. Instead of scrolling raw XML in a browser tab, you get the feed title, the item count and every item’s title, link, publication date and text excerpt — then a single JSON download.

How it works here

Your feed URL is sent to the site’s /api/extract endpoint with the rss operation. The server validates the URL, refuses private or local network addresses, fetches the XML with a 12-second timeout and a ~3 MB response cap, then parses RSS <item> and Atom <entry> elements into one normalised item shape. The parsed result is cached server-side for 10 minutes, so re-extracting the same feed returns instantly and is labelled Served from cache in the progress panel.

Not yet verified

  • Formal browser and version support matrix (works in current evergreen browsers in practice).
  • Future pricing tiers or paid quotas for the extraction endpoint.
  • Detailed request logging and retention policy beyond the 10-minute result cache.
Supported feeds
RSS 2.0 <item> and Atom <entry> documents served over public http or https.
Caching & speed
Parsed results are cached for 10 minutes per feed URL; repeat runs skip the network fetch entirely.
Safety & privacy
No account, no upload. Private, local and internal addresses are blocked, and requests are limited to 30 per minute per IP.
Output
One JSON file (rss-feed-downloader.json) with feed URL, feed title, item count and items. No CSV, XML or OPML export.

Limitations & troubleshooting

  • Only current items: the tool returns exactly what the publisher lists in the XML — there is no archive pagination.
  • Excerpts truncate at 280 characters: open the item link for the full article; full post bodies are not extracted.
  • One feed per run: batch extraction across many feeds is not supported.
  • No media downloads: podcast enclosures and attached media files are not parsed or fetched.
  • Blocked or invalid URLs fail fast: HTML pages, private hosts, oversized responses and slow servers return a clear error instead of partial data.

Frequently asked questions

What is an RSS feed downloader?

An RSS feed downloader is an online tool that fetches a public RSS or Atom feed and turns its items into a readable list plus a downloadable file. On Tools Lab PRO the feed is fetched and parsed on our server via the /api/extract endpoint, and the result is returned as feed title, item count, and an items array of titles, links, dates and excerpts.

How do I download an RSS feed?

Paste the feed URL, select Extract feed, then use Download JSON. The file saves as rss-feed-downloader.json and contains the feed URL, feed title, item count and the items array. Nothing is installed and no account is needed.

How do I find a website's RSS feed URL?

Try common paths first: /feed, /rss, /feed.xml or /atom.xml. If none work, open the page source and look for a <link rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml"> tag — its href is the feed URL. Paste that exact URL here.

Does it support Atom feeds as well as RSS?

Yes. The parser reads both RSS <item> elements and Atom <entry> elements, so classic RSS 2.0 feeds and Atom feeds both work. Fields are normalised into the same title, link, date and excerpt shape.

What format does the download use?

JSON only. The downloaded file contains the requested feed URL, the feed title, the item count and the items array. There is no CSV, XML or OPML export, so import the JSON into your own script or spreadsheet tool if you need another format.

Is RSS Feed Downloader free, and do I need an account?

It is free and requires no sign-up or email. To keep the service available for everyone, the extraction endpoint allows 30 requests per minute per IP address; beyond that you are asked to wait before the next request.

Can I use it on a phone or tablet?

Yes. The tool runs in any modern mobile or desktop browser with nothing to install, because parsing happens on the server. Saving the JSON file depends on your mobile browser allowing downloads.

Why is my feed URL not working?

The most common causes are a wrong URL, an HTML page rather than feed XML, or a publisher blocking automated requests. Only public http:// and https:// URLs are accepted, private and local network addresses are blocked, requests time out after about 12 seconds, and responses larger than roughly 3 MB are rejected.

Why are only some items showing?

The tool returns exactly what the feed publishes. Most feeds only list the newest items — commonly 10 to 50 — and there is no archive pagination, so older posts that the publisher dropped from the XML cannot be recovered here.

Why is the description text cut off?

Excerpts are deliberately capped at 280 characters after HTML tags are stripped, so the results list and JSON stay compact and readable. Open the item link when you need the full article text; the tool does not extract full post bodies.

Can I download multiple feeds at once?

No. Each run handles one feed URL. Repeat the extraction for each feed you need, keeping the 30 requests per minute per IP limit in mind when working through a long list of publishers.

Is my feed URL stored?

There is no account and no file upload. The feed URL and its parsed result are cached server-side for 10 minutes so repeat requests for the same feed return instantly, and the cache entry expires after that window.

How is this different from a feed reader like Feedly?

A feed reader manages ongoing subscriptions, unread state and notifications. This tool is built for one-off reading and structured export: paste a URL, see the current items, download them as JSON, with no account and nothing to maintain.

Can it download podcast audio from an RSS feed?

No. The extractor collects item titles, links, publication dates and text excerpts. Enclosure and media files such as podcast MP3s are not parsed or downloaded, so use a dedicated podcast client for audio.
