What is the QR Code Generator?
A complete, privacy-first QR code creation tool
QR Code Generator is a free in-browser tool that turns text, URLs, Wi-Fi credentials, contact cards, email addresses, and SMS messages into scannable QR codes. It implements the full ISO/IEC 18004 specification — the international standard every modern phone camera and barcode scanner reads — so the codes you produce here work everywhere, no exceptions.
The tool runs entirely inside your browser. The text you type to encode, the colors you pick, the dimensions you choose — none of it touches a server. That matters when you're encoding sensitive material like Wi-Fi passwords, internal URLs, customer contact details, or links to private dashboards. There's no analytics on your inputs, no shared CDN caching your QR images, and no account to sign up for.
Outputs come as either high-resolution PNG (ideal for digital use, social posts, slide decks, and email signatures) or scalable SVG (the right pick for print, signage, packaging, and anywhere you need infinite resolution). All four error-correction levels are supported so you can balance density against robustness — vital when you plan to overlay a logo or print the code on a surface that might get scuffed.
Static codes that never expire and require no server
Six content presets: URL, plain text, Wi-Fi, vCard, email, SMS
Full color customization with contrast warnings
ISO/IEC 18004 compliant — scans on every modern device

On the ground — real use cases
Where QR codes earn their keep every day
QR codes have quietly become essential infrastructure for marketing, retail, hospitality, events, and contactless workflows.
Restaurant menus
Restaurants and cafés print QR codes on tables that link to a digital menu. Updates happen instantly without reprinting, allergen info stays current, and customers see today's specials in real time. Bonus: no shared physical menus, which is hygienic and reduces wear on printed materials.
Business cards & vCards
Add a vCard QR code to the back of every business card so contacts save your details in one tap instead of fumbling to type them. Works at conferences, trade shows, networking events, and anywhere you'd rather skip the awkward retyping while standing across from someone.
Wi-Fi guest access
Hotels, Airbnbs, coffee shops, coworking spaces, and offices print a Wi-Fi QR code on a card or poster. Guests scan to connect instantly without staff repeating the password ten times an hour. The code can be replaced quickly when the password rotates for security.
Event tickets & checkin
Conferences, concerts, and meetups embed a unique URL in each attendee's QR code. Door staff scan to validate entry in under a second. The same code can carry session bookings, badge printing data, or links to networking profiles for instant attendee lookups.
Product packaging
E-commerce brands and retailers add QR codes to packaging that link to setup instructions, warranty registration, return forms, or product videos. Customers get rich help without manuals, and brands get scan data that reveals where and when products are unboxed.
Marketing & print campaigns
Posters, flyers, newspaper ads, magazine spreads, vehicle wraps, and out-of-home advertising use QR codes to bridge physical and digital. Add UTM parameters to the encoded URL and you can track exactly which campaign drove which traffic, with no extra technology required.
Supported platforms & where it works
Generate anywhere, scan everywhere
The generator runs in any modern browser, and the QR codes it produces scan on every modern device.
Windows
Generate in Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Brave on Windows 10 and 11. Drag and drop files isn't needed — you just type the content. PNG downloads land in your default Downloads folder and SVG files open straight into Affinity Designer, Inkscape, or any vector editor for further branding.
macOS
Works in Safari, Chrome, Firefox, Arc, and Brave on Intel and Apple Silicon. SVG outputs drop straight into Sketch, Figma, Affinity, or Illustrator with no conversion. Compose the QR code in the browser, drag it onto your page, and continue your design without breaking flow.
Linux
Fully supported on Chromium, Firefox, and Brave across Ubuntu, Fedora, Debian, Arch, and Pop!_OS. Privacy-focused browsers like LibreWolf and Mullvad Browser work too. Useful for technical writers and documentation teams who need consistent QR codes for printed handbooks and developer guides.
iOS & iPadOS
Generate in Safari on iPhone or iPad, then save the PNG directly to Photos or Files for sharing. Scan with the built-in Camera app — iOS detects QR codes automatically since iOS 11. iPadOS users can paste the resulting SVG into Procreate, Affinity Designer for iPad, or Keynote slides.
Android
Works in Chrome, Firefox, Samsung Internet, and Brave on Android 9 and later. Save downloads to your Files app, share to messaging apps, or pin to Keep notes for repeat use. Scanning is built into Google Lens and most camera apps from Samsung, OnePlus, Xiaomi, and Pixel.
Print & industrial scanners
Codes produced here meet the ISO/IEC 18004 standard, so they're compatible with industrial Honeywell, Zebra, and Datalogic scanners used in retail, warehousing, manufacturing, healthcare, and logistics. The SVG output gives crisp results at any print resolution, including 1200 DPI for fine packaging.
Frequently asked questions
Is the QR Code Generator free to use?
Yes. QR Code Generator on Tools Lab Pro is completely free with no daily limits, no watermarks, no ads on the tool, and no signup. Generate one code or one thousand — the experience is identical. There is no premium tier hiding the good features: full color customization, all error-correction levels, SVG and high-resolution PNG downloads, every content preset, and unlimited code length are available to everyone. Use the codes for personal projects, client work, business cards, packaging, advertising campaigns, restaurant menus, or anything else, including commercial use, without any licensing fee or attribution requirement.
Do my generated QR codes expire?
No. The codes generated here are static QR codes, which means the data you enter is encoded directly into the pattern of the code itself. There is no server lookup, no redirect, and no expiry date. A code you print today will scan correctly ten years from now, as long as the pattern stays readable. If you ever need to change the destination of a code, you'll need to generate a fresh one and update the printed material. For destinations you might want to change later, encode a short URL you control (like a Bitly or your own domain) so you can update the redirect target without reprinting.
Can I use these QR codes commercially?
Yes. There is no licensing fee, no attribution requirement, no royalty, and no restriction on commercial use. Print them on business cards, posters, packaging, billboards, flyers, restaurant menus, product labels, vehicle wraps, event tickets, or any commercial product. The QR code specification itself is an open ISO standard (ISO/IEC 18004) created by Denso Wave, who released the patent for free public use back in 1999. The codes produced by this tool follow that standard exactly, so they're compatible with every QR scanner on the planet — including phone cameras, dedicated scanners, and warehouse inventory systems.
What's the difference between error-correction levels?
Error correction adds redundant data to the code so it can still be scanned if parts are damaged, dirty, or covered. Level L recovers up to 7% damage, M up to 15%, Q up to 25%, and H up to 30%. Higher correction means a denser pattern with more dots, but a more robust code. Use L for clean digital displays where damage isn't a risk. Use M for general print. Use Q for outdoor signage or anything that might get scuffed. Use H if you plan to overlay a logo in the center of the code, because the logo effectively damages part of the pattern that error correction needs to recover from.
Why is my QR code not scanning?
The most common reasons are low contrast, low resolution at the printed size, or aggressive color choices. Make sure your foreground is significantly darker than the background — black on white is the gold standard. If you've inverted the colors (light foreground on dark background), some older scanners refuse to read it. Print the code at a minimum of 2 × 2 cm and keep a clean white margin (called the quiet zone) of at least four modules around the code. Shiny or laminated surfaces can also reflect light and confuse the camera; matte finishes scan more reliably outdoors and under fluorescent lights.
Can I generate a QR code for Wi-Fi?
Yes. Pick the Wi-Fi preset, enter your network SSID (the network name), the password, and the encryption type (WPA, WEP, or none). The code is formatted using the standard WIFI: scheme that iOS, Android, and most modern operating systems recognize natively. Anyone who scans the code is prompted to join the network with a single tap — no typing required. This is a favorite for cafés, restaurants, hotels, offices, Airbnb hosts, and event organizers. The password is stored inside the code in plain text, so don't share the code publicly if your network has access to sensitive systems.
What size should I print my QR code?
A good rule of thumb is scan-distance divided by ten. For a code that needs to be scanned from one meter away, print at least 10 × 10 cm. For a billboard at 10 meters, print at least 1 meter wide. Smaller codes need higher contrast, higher error correction, and a steady scanning hand. For business cards, 2 × 2 cm at full quality works well at arm's length. Always test the printed code at the actual scanning distance with both an iPhone and an Android device before mass-producing — what looks fine on screen might fail in practice.
Static vs dynamic QR codes — what's the difference?
Static codes (what we generate) embed the data directly into the pattern and never change. They scan instantly, work offline, and don't require any subscription. Dynamic codes route through a server that redirects to your chosen destination, so the destination can be edited later — useful if you print a code and want to change where it points after the fact. The trade-off is that dynamic codes require a paid service, depend on the redirect server staying online forever, and can be slower to scan because of the extra network hop. For most use cases, a static code pointing at a stable URL is the more durable choice.
Can I add a logo to the center of my QR code?
Yes. Set the error correction to H (30%) so the code can survive losing the center pixels to your logo. Generate the code, then overlay your logo in any image editor (Photoshop, Figma, Canva, GIMP). Keep the logo's area under 25% of the total code so the scanner still has enough pattern to lock onto. White space around the logo helps scanners distinguish it from the QR pattern. After overlaying, always test the result by scanning it with multiple phone cameras to make sure your specific logo size and placement haven't broken readability.
Will my QR code work on iPhone and Android cameras?
Yes. All modern smartphone cameras scan QR codes natively without a separate app. iPhones running iOS 11 or later detect codes automatically in the Camera app. Android phones running version 9 or later support Google Lens directly from the camera. Samsung Galaxy phones have native QR support from One UI 2 onward. Older Android phones might need a free scanner app from Google Play. The codes we generate use the standard format, so they work with every reader, including dedicated industrial barcode scanners used in warehouses and logistics.
Should I download my QR code as PNG or SVG?
Use SVG for print and large displays — it's a vector format, so it scales infinitely without losing sharpness. SVG opens in Illustrator, Affinity Designer, Inkscape, Canva, Figma, and every modern web browser. Use PNG for digital use, social media, email signatures, slide decks, or anywhere SVG isn't supported. PNG with a transparent background is especially useful for placing the code on a colored layout in PowerPoint or Keynote. For absolutely maximum print resolution, generate the PNG at a large pixel size (we default to 1024 × 1024, but you can go higher for billboard-scale jobs).
Can I track scans of my QR code?
Static codes can't be tracked directly because there's no server in the loop. To get analytics, encode a URL that you control and that has tracking built in. The simplest approach is a URL with UTM parameters (utm_source=qr, utm_medium=print, utm_campaign=summer-2026) that lands on a page in your Google Analytics, Plausible, or Fathom setup. You can also point the code at a Bitly or Rebrandly short link, which gives you scan counts, location data, and the ability to edit the destination later without reprinting the code.
Are QR codes safe to use?
The codes themselves are completely safe — they're just an encoded version of text or a URL. The risk is what they link to. Malicious actors sometimes paste fake QR codes over real ones to redirect victims to phishing sites. As a user, always check the URL preview your phone shows before tapping. As a creator, link to short, recognizable URLs on your own domain so people trust where the code is taking them. For high-stakes printed materials (parking meters, restaurant payment), use tamper-evident stickers and check them periodically to make sure your real code is still in place.
What's the maximum amount of data a QR code can hold?
Technically up to 4,296 alphanumeric characters or 7,089 numeric digits in version 40 (the largest). In practice, longer payloads create denser, harder-to-scan codes. URLs under 60 characters scan instantly from arm's length. Anything over 200 characters starts to look cluttered and requires a larger printed size or a higher-resolution camera. If you find yourself near the limit, shorten the URL with a redirect service, drop unnecessary query parameters, or encode the data on a landing page that the QR code links to instead of cramming it all into the code.
Can I generate a QR code that opens an app?
Yes. Use a deep link URL (such as yourapp:// or a Universal Link / App Link URL) that your app is registered to handle. On iOS, configure Universal Links in your associated domains file; on Android, set up App Links in your AndroidManifest. The QR code carries the URL, and the operating system opens your app if it's installed. As a fallback, point the URL at a webpage that detects the device and redirects to the App Store or Play Store if the app isn't installed — that way no user reaches a dead end.
Why does my QR code look pixelated?
You're either viewing it at a size much larger than its source resolution or you used a low PNG export size. Regenerate the code at a higher pixel size (try 2048 × 2048) or download the SVG version, which scales infinitely without pixelation. Avoid upscaling a small PNG in Photoshop — the codec invents pixels that blur the pattern's sharp edges and can cause scan failures. For print jobs, work in SVG from the very start, then export to a high-resolution raster only at the final print stage if your printer requires PNG or PDF.
How long does the generated QR code stay available?
The code itself is yours forever — there is no expiry, no remote storage, and no shared link. The PNG or SVG file you download lives on your device until you delete it. Because the data is embedded inside the code, the code keeps working as long as you keep the file or the printed material. We don't store anything on our side, so there's nothing to expire. Back up the source file the same way you back up any other brand asset — once printed on packaging or signage, you don't want to lose the original.
Can I generate a vCard QR code for my contact info?
Yes. Pick the vCard preset and fill in your name, phone, email, company, title, address, and website. The code is formatted as a standard vCard 3.0 payload, which iOS and Android recognize natively. When someone scans it, they see a contact card with one tap to save to their phonebook. Great for business cards, conference name badges, and email signatures. If you want a smaller, denser code, omit optional fields like address and notes — every additional character makes the code more complex and harder to scan from a distance.
How does this compare to QRCode Monkey or QR Code Generator Pro?
Visually the codes are identical because the QR specification leaves little room for variation — what differs is the workflow. QRCode Monkey runs server-side and offers more decorative templates but limits high-resolution downloads to paid users. QR Code Generator Pro focuses on dynamic codes (the kind you pay for) with analytics. Tools Lab Pro is fully client-side (your data never leaves your browser), gives unlimited high-res PNG and SVG downloads for free, and ships every option in one consistent interface alongside related tools like Wi-Fi presets and vCard builders.
Can I generate a QR code with rounded corners or custom shapes?
The current MVP focuses on standard square modules for maximum scanner compatibility across the broadest range of devices. Rounded modules, dot patterns, and custom eye shapes are visually attractive but reduce scan reliability on older or industrial scanners, which is why they're not the default. If you want a stylized look, generate the code here, then add visual treatments in a design tool. Stick to keeping the three large corner markers (the position-detection patterns) intact, because changing those is the single most common reason custom QR codes fail to scan.
How do I use QR Code Generator?
Open the QR Code Generator page, drop your file into the upload area (or click to browse), choose any options you want to tweak, and click the primary action button. Within a second or two you'll see a preview of the result; click Download to save it. The whole flow is designed so you don't need a tutorial — sensible defaults handle 90% of cases, and advanced controls are available if you need to fine-tune the output. Because QR Code Generator runs in your browser, the result is generated locally and is ready the moment processing finishes.
Is QR Code Generator really free?
Yes. QR Code Generator is part of the Tools Lab Pro free tier with no daily cap, no watermark, no signup, and no credit card. We don't gate features behind a Pro plan on this tool: batch processing, advanced controls, and download options are all free to use. The only optional paid tier on Tools Lab Pro covers high-volume API access and a few AI tools that cost us per request — everything browser-side is free forever for personal and commercial use.
Do I need to create an account to use QR Code Generator?
No. QR Code Generator runs without any login, email, or signup. You can open the page in a fresh browser, use the tool, and close the tab with zero trace left behind. Creating a free account is optional and only useful if you want history, favorites, or sync across devices — it does not unlock any extra capability inside QR Code Generator itself. Anonymous and signed-in users get exactly the same output quality and the same options.
Is QR Code Generator safe and private to use?
Yes. Wherever possible, QR Code Generator processes your files entirely in your browser — your inputs are not uploaded to a server, not logged, and not retained anywhere. That makes the tool safe for client work, internal documents, personal media, ID photos, contracts, and anything covered by GDPR or HIPAA-style privacy concerns. We can't see your files because we never receive them; the network tab in your browser will confirm only static assets load during a job.
What file formats does QR Code Generator support?
QR Code Generator supports the formats most users actually need for its category. The upload area lists accepted types, and the tool gracefully rejects unsupported files with a clear error message instead of failing silently. If your specific format is not listed, you can usually convert it to a supported format with another Tools Lab Pro utility first — for example, converting HEIC to JPG, MOV to MP4, or DOCX to PDF — and then run it through QR Code Generator.
Is there a file size limit on QR Code Generator?
There is no fixed server-side limit because the work runs locally in your browser. In practice, performance is bounded by your device's memory and CPU. Modern laptops handle individual files up to several hundred megabytes without issue; mid-range phones do best with files under ~50 MB or with batches processed a few files at a time. If a very large input crashes the tab, split it into smaller chunks or resize it first using the matching Tools Lab Pro utility.
How accurate are the results from QR Code Generator?
QR Code Generator uses production-grade open-source libraries and well-tested algorithms for the heavy lifting, so accuracy on typical inputs is on par with commercial desktop tools. Edge cases — extremely large files, unusual codecs, malformed inputs — can produce less-than-perfect results, which is true of every tool in this category. For mission-critical work (legal, medical, financial), always sanity-check the output before relying on it, the same way you would with any automated pipeline.
Does QR Code Generator work on mobile devices?
Yes. QR Code Generator is fully responsive and runs in Safari on iPhone/iPad, Chrome and Samsung Internet on Android, and Firefox on both. The file picker uses your native gallery and Files app, and downloads save to Photos or your Downloads folder depending on the OS. Performance scales with your phone — newer flagships handle batches without breaking a sweat, while older devices may want one file at a time.
Can I use QR Code Generator for commercial or client work?
Yes. Outputs from QR Code Generator are yours to use however you like — personal projects, client deliverables, commercial products, paid campaigns. There are no licensing fees, no attribution requirements, and no quotas. Agencies, freelancers, e-commerce stores, SaaS teams, and large enterprises all use Tools Lab Pro tools in production workflows without owing us anything. The only thing we ask is that you don't resell access to the tool itself as if it were your own.
Does QR Code Generator watermark the output?
No. QR Code Generator never adds a watermark, logo, footer, or any other branding to your downloaded result. The file you save is identical to what a paid desktop tool would produce. This is true on the free tier as well as for signed-in users — we don't believe in the dark pattern of letting you try a tool, then revealing at download time that you'll need to upgrade to remove a watermark you didn't agree to.
Use these as starting points and adapt the colors, sizes, and error correction to fit your project.
Business card vCard

Restaurant menu
URL preset (linking to your digital menu), black on white, error correction M, 5 × 5 cm PNG. Print on table tents with matte lamination to reduce glare. Tested clean from sitting distance under indoor lighting in cafés, bars, and quick-service restaurants worldwide.
Wi-Fi access card
Wi-Fi preset, WPA2 encryption, error correction Q, 6 × 6 cm. Print on cardstock with a clear quiet zone. Guests tap to connect without ever seeing the password — ideal for hotels, Airbnbs, coworking spaces, and any business with rotating guest credentials and limited staff time.
Event badge URL
URL preset with UTM parameters (utm_source=event&utm_medium=badge), error correction H, branded color, 3 × 3 cm. Allows your check-in app to scan, log the attendee, and trigger a personalized welcome. Track every interaction from check-in through session attendance.
Tool features & benefits
Everything packed into the free QR Code Generator
Six content presets
Pick from URL, plain text, Wi-Fi, vCard contact, email, and SMS presets. Each preset formats the underlying data using the correct standard scheme so any modern scanner recognizes the intent (open browser, save contact, join Wi-Fi) without any guessing on the user's part.
Full color customization
Set any foreground and background color with HEX, RGB, or color picker. Built-in contrast warnings flag combinations that might fail to scan reliably, so your branded codes look great and still work in the wild on every device, from flagship phones to older budget Androids.
All four error-correction levels
Pick L (7%), M (15%), Q (25%), or H (30%) error correction. Higher levels survive more damage and let you overlay a logo without breaking the code. The generator shows how each level affects density so you can balance robustness against pattern complexity for your printed size.
PNG and SVG downloads
Export as PNG for digital use (email signatures, social posts, slide decks) or as SVG for print, signage, and packaging. SVG scales infinitely with no quality loss, so a single download covers a business card and a billboard equally well — no need to regenerate at every target size.
Static codes, no server lookup
Every code we generate is static — the data is encoded directly into the pattern. No expiry, no redirect server to maintain, no monthly fee, no risk of a third-party service shutting down and breaking your printed materials years from now. The code you make today works decades later.
Privacy by design
Everything runs in your browser. The URLs, Wi-Fi passwords, and contact details you encode never touch a server. There's no log of what you generated, no shared cache of QR images, and no account required. Use it for sensitive internal links and confidential connection info with complete confidence.
Performance & processing details
How fast it is and what runs under the hood
Generation is effectively instant. Even at the largest QR version (40, holding up to 4,296 characters), the encoder produces the final pattern in under 50 ms on any modern device. The browser then renders the SVG or rasterizes the PNG in another 20–100 ms depending on requested resolution. There's no waiting, no spinner, no server queue — every change to your text, colors, or settings appears in the preview within a single screen refresh.
The encoder implements the full Reed-Solomon error correction and matrix masking algorithms from the QR specification, picking the optimal mask pattern for your specific data to maximize scan reliability. For mixed content (alphanumeric mixed with kanji or numeric runs), it segments the data automatically to use the most compact encoding for each section, which gives a smaller, easier-to-scan code than encoders that pick a single mode for everything.
Because everything runs locally, the tool works offline once the page has loaded. That's useful at conferences with patchy Wi-Fi, in retail environments behind strict firewalls, or anywhere a server-dependent generator would fail. Generated codes are pure SVG or PNG, so they integrate immediately with every design tool, document editor, and print workflow without conversion.
Sub-50ms encoding even for the largest QR versions
Automatic mask selection for optimal scan reliability
Mixed-mode segmentation for the most compact code possible
Works offline after first page load

Common problems & fixes
Quick answers when your QR code misbehaves
Code won't scan from screen or print
Check contrast — keep the foreground much darker than the background. Avoid inverted codes (light on dark) when targeting older scanners. Increase the printed size or screen rendering size, raise error correction to Q or H, and make sure the quiet zone (white margin) around the code is at least four modules wide.
Logo overlay broke the code
The logo is too large. Cap its area at 25% of the code's total area, and use error correction H so the code can survive losing its center. Add a small white border around the logo to help the scanner distinguish logo from pattern, then test with at least one iPhone and one Android camera before printing.
Code looks too dense / hard to scan
You've packed in too much data. Shorten the URL using a redirect service, drop unnecessary query parameters, or move the long content to a landing page and link to that. Less data means a lower QR version, fewer modules, and a code that scans from farther away with less effort and more reliably under bad lighting.
PNG is blurry when printed large
PNG is raster — it can't scale up without losing sharpness. Download the SVG version instead and use that for any print job. SVG is vector, so it stays crisp at billboard size. If your print shop insists on PNG, regenerate at a much higher pixel size (try 4096 × 4096) before sending.
Wi-Fi QR code doesn't connect on Android
Older Android versions don't support the WIFI: URI scheme natively. Confirm the device is on Android 10 or later, and that the encryption type in the code matches the router's actual setting (WPA2 vs WPA3 can trip up some phones). As a fallback, print the SSID and password as plain text under the code.
